Reminders to look at the big picture

Rate this Entry
I have just been reminded how useful it is to have an outside influence occasionally make you look at your business in a different way.

In this case, I have started on an ecourse that in some ways may require more time than I feel I can spare for it and in some ways may be easier than I need (ie aimed at those less experienced than me). However, by the end of lesson one I had made the time to review and update a couple of things (some of which relates to a software update that gave useful features I had never known of!) I think just having regular topics to consider and being 'forced' to stop client work to do so will have a lot of benefits.

So I am making mental notes to keep doing things to get such reminders of important but not so urgent tasks.

How do you keep making time for reviews and looking at the big picture? Is it something you do consistently, or you do need the occasional prod like me?

I'm in the process of organising a meeting with 2 other business women (one of them a DCW member!) for the purpose of looking at those bigger picture issues and getting some objectivity. For me personally, this will be valuable because like you, I don't often take the time out of client work to make time for things like this, even though I KNOW it's so important. Accountability is so important, in whatever form it comes in.

I must admit I have hated accountability - but getting my husband involved and being accountable to him on a weekly basis has seen BIG growth in the last two weeks. For me I need the structure. When I was in corporate I had weekly meetings, and monthly meetings and weekly reports and KPI reports blah blah blah - I can now see why I need to start the same thing with my business. For me having these meetings is now as important as " doing the do".
